We love throwing parties and having guests. We have some simple tips at our house for having a company ready welcoming home! Summer is a great time to enjoy the company of good friends.  All you need to do is have a few things on hand so you are ready!

Be the perfect host with these tips for welcoming guests into your home

• Tidy Up!

We use guests coming as our motivation to get our home in order.  Guest will feel more peaceful if your home is tidy. Don’t miss my amazing shower cleaner using Dawn Dishwashing Liquid. Only two ingredients! At our home, we have to give a special shout-out to Dawn Dishwashing Liquid because a couple squirts help put on our water skis all summer long!

• Stock up on the necessities

Don’t run out of the necessities by keeping some extras on hand.  We make sure we have loads of paper goods like Charmin Ultra Strong Toilet Paper, Bounty Select-A-Size Paper Towels, napkins, and tissues. Remember you will be doing extra dishes and cleaning (and skiing) so grab an extra bottle of Dawn Original Dishwashing Liquid dishwashing liquid.

• Have plenty of food and drinks

Keep the fridge stocked with a wide variety of beverages and snacks. Make it easy for your guests to grab a quick snack whenever they want. We also place snacks and drinks in our guest room. Leaving a couple of bottles of water and sweet and savory snacks are an extra special touch.  A little chocolate for their pillow is sweet too!

• Have extra toiletries on hand

Just like a hotel bathroom, you can lay out a few toiletries like soap, shampoo and conditioner, and lotion.  Make sure the bathrooms are stocked with extra Charmin Ultra Strong toilet paper and items that are frequently used like Pantene Daily Moisture Renewal Shampoo, conditioner and Old Spice High Endurance body wash.

• Plan Activities

At our home, we are fortunate to be able to ski and swim.  Make sure you have a variety of options to keep guests entertained. Plan an outing to a local attraction for guests that like to go and do!

• Photo – My photo was 8 1/2″ X 11″ in size
• Computer
• Photoshop Elements 2018 (download your free trial here)
• Printer
• Heavyweight copy paper
• Souvenirs (photos, postcards, trinkets etc.)
• 8 X 10 shadow box frame
• Foam mounting circles, archival taper runner and or straight pins for attaching the items into the shadow box

How to Make a  Shadow Box

Use Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018, to create a keepsake memory box. In this quick video, I will show you how easy it is to transform a photograph into text.  Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 offers many Guided Edits that provide step-by-step instructions to make it easy to give your photos amazing effects. It is easy to use the photo text guided edit to turn a photo into cool visual text.

How to use the Photo Text Guided Edit in Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018

Choose the Guided mode at the top, then Fun Edits. Next, select Photo Text. The guided Photo Text edit allows you use a photo to fill a block of text.

Open up a photo and select type tool in the right column. Type a word. Highlight the word to change the font size. I chose 200 pt. Click the green checkmark to confirm. In the right menu will see other edits that can be helpful in creating your photo text. You can choose if you want the font to fit or fill on the photo, choose a background, crop and also adjust the intensity of the bevel, drop shadow and stroke for the text.

Position the word over the photo. This word can be moved anywhere on the page to display a desired area of the photograph.

Select file, then print in the menu across the top. On the right side of the screen elect 8 X 10 for the paper size. Drag the word to the top of the page.  This will allow plenty of room to display the memorabilia. 

Grab your photos, postcards and or small items to be displayed.  We lived overseas for five years. We knew that every place we visited our kids would want a souvenir. We decided to pick one item for each. For our son Bradley, we chose postcards. However, we did more than just buy a postcard.  We would write about what we did and mail it back to our home. When we started this he was one and we would write for him.  He is now 21 and I was thrilled to see a postcard delivered to our home recently after a trip. He had written about all that he and done! In those five years abroad we visited 21 different countries and countless towns. He now has the most amazing journal and it keeps growing!

This memory shadow box is a great way for him to display his keepsakes! Arrange the items on the page of photo text.  Place this on top of the shadow box insert.  Typically this backing is padded so straight pins work well for fastening items.  Archival tape and foam mounting circles work well also.

A shadow box has an extra deep frame perfect for mounting 3-dimensional objects. The foam mounting circles work great for attaching items to the frame.

Fasten the back into the frame.

Now you have the perfect way to display those special mementos and remember good times and fun memories!

I’m making easy 4th of July decorations.  Lunch bag flowers or in this case lunch bag stars are my go-to simple and inexpensive party decoration! They are perfect Fourth of July decorations or make them out of white lunch bags for beautiful bridal shower decorations. Give the white lunch sack flowers a few cuts along the edge and they make wonderful lunch bag snowflakes.

I am a huge fan of party decorations! Especially hanging decorations.

How to make Hanging Lunch Bag Flowers Party Decorations

For each lunch bag flower, you need six lunch bags.

Just the regular paper lunch sacks. Any color or size lunch sacks work.  Mini bags make cute flowers too! I have also used the bulk packs of inexpensive white lunch sacks.  It is was I used for my niece’s bridesmaid lunch (above link) and then turned them into snowflakes.

Fold down the bottom.

Cut the bottom of the lunch bag off.

Trim the top of all six lunch bags in a petal shape.

Place hot glue along the lower side bottom, about two to three inches from the bottom on each side. Place another lunch bag on top. Continue gluing until you have sandwiched all six bags.

You have hooked the bags together. Make sure the glue doesn’t run over the edges.

Fan the sacks out and fasten with glue. It is a bit tricky, but you will get the hang of it. I do one side then the other. Place hot glue in the center if needed to match up bags.

Punch a hole in one petal and hang with fishing line.

Here are five hacks for storing fruit that actually make it last longer. Summer is the perfect time to buy lots of fresh fruit. We love to buy it at fruit stands and I am always looking for a deal a the grocery store.  I love to make homemade jam when strawberries and raspberries are in season. A few years ago I realized I did not always know the best way to store fruit to make it last so I did some research.  Do you have any tips for storing fruit? Let me know in the comments.

5 Hacks For Storing Fruit

Bananas

Wrap banana stems with plastic wrap to help them not ripen as quickly.

Did you know you can freeze bananas?  I place brown or spotted bananas in the freezer and always have ripe bananas for baking. See banana bread recipe below.

Apples

Remove all bruised or spotted apples and store on the counter (eat within one or two days).

Store other apples in the crisper drawer in the fridge (or the coldest spot).  Consider throwing a wet paper towel over the top they will last even longer.

Oranges

Oranges last about a week at room temperature, to extend that time to 2-3 weeks store in the fridge.

Lemons

Store on the counter out of the sunlight.  They will last about a week.

For longer lasting lemons store them in the fridge in an airtight ziplock bag in the crisper drawer (slide the humidity level all the way to the left or to the lowest setting)  they will last for up to four weeks.

Limes

Store limes in the fridge in a loose plastic bag for one to two weeks.  After two weeks you can still use them but they will lose some flavor.
You can also store lime wedges or slices for about a week in a plastic bag. Lime juice is good even longer. You can store lime juice for four months in the freezer.

Looking to get in shape and get fit this summer? These dieting hacks will help you get on track, stay on track and meet your goals.

Drink More Water

Take your body weight and divide it in half. Then drink that many ounces of water per day! Water will hydrate your body and help you feel full.

Eat Small Snacks

Eating small healthy snacks keeps you full and on track. Look for high protein, low-calorie snacks like nuts. I like to pack healthy snacks for on the go so I won’t get hungry and get tempted to cheat.

Don’t Skip Meals

Plan your meals out and don’t skip meals. Skipping meals will make you overly hungry and you will almost always overeat. Eating 5-6 small meals will help you not get hungry.

Get Rid Of The Junk

Go through the fridge and cupboards and say goodbye to the junk. Set yourself up for success and make sure you have plenty of healthy food you like on hand. Don’t go to the extreme, if you eat less you will make progress that you can maintain.

Get Moving

Walk, run, hit the gym. Get up and get moving. Start slow, and track your progress. I love my fit bit. It tracks my steps, active minutes and lets me compete with myself and friends. If you like to cycle or hit the gym you might try a polar fitness watch it tracks heart rate, calories, and even distance.

Box It Up

It is hard to stay on track on the go or at a restaurant. If you are eating out and worried about overeating, eat half. Set aside half your meal to be boxed up. That way you won’t overeat.

Track Your Calories

Get educated and find out what you are eating. Using an smartphone with an app like my fitness pal you can track your calories. Grab a notebook that works well too. The simple formula of burning more calories than you consume will help you lose weight.

Avoid Juice and Sugar Soda

Avoid fruit juice or sugar soda. Juice is fruit with the fiber removed. Not to mention, most of them are packed with sugar. Opt for the real thing instead. They are also full of empty calories that will pack on the pounds.

1 – Sigma E 55 The flat brush is perfect for applying color across the lid!
2-  Mac 217 Brush (perfect for putting shadow in the crease)
3 – Mac 239 Perfect for Highlighting above your eye shadow and below brows.
4 – Sigma E 40 Blending brush. Must have for blending eye shadow.
5- Sigma E 45 This is perfect for more precise work and is great for applying color in the out corner of the eye.

Keeping your make up brushes clean can make all the difference in how long they last and how well they perform!  Dirty brushes won’t pick up as much product and don’t perform well.  Not to mention they don’t last as long either.  I love to make this makeup brush cleaner and spray and clean them once a week.  It’s so easy you will wonder why you haven’t been making your own all along!

DIY Solution:
2 cups warm water – 3 tbsp vinegar – 2 tbsp dawn dish soap – 10 sprays of conditioner. Dip in water and rinse!Store in a small spray bottle!

If you are looking to learn some basics about applying your eye shadow, the internet is filled with helpful tutorials!  With some basic techniques you can improve well beyond the sponge applicators and drug store products!   I have learned so much from Make up by TiffanyD, Make Up Geek and Kate at the Small things blog.  Search the internet you will find even all these in more.  My suggestion is to watch a few tutorials and practice practice practice.

These jeans have all my favorite things, stretch and high waist! They are the perfect classic skinny.

This is my favorite bra I have ever owned and you can get it for a unbelieveable price!  Try it, I promise you will never buy another brand again. If you are looking for a full coverage bra that doesn’t fall off your shoulders or add bulk this is another great choice.  Both on sale.

I used to think all pajamas were the same, that is until I tried these at last years sale… these pajamas are light and comfortable and you will want to live in them! I will never buy another brand of pj’s again. Try them in short or long style! These make great Christmas gifts at this price.

My little girl should be receiving this summer camp care package while at a sleep-away camp! Last year I sent a similar care package with inspirational cute sayings for candy and small gifts. Here is this year’s updated version!

Honey Mustard Chicken is an easy delicious dinner! This one you will have it ready from start to finish in less than 30 minutes.

Honey Mustard Chicken Dump Meal

Almost two years later and we still use the Instant Pot pressure cooker almost every night.  If it isn’t cooking up the whole meal it is at least making a side dish. Be sure to check out my family’s favorite pressure cooker recipes.

We are a huge fan of the dump meals.  At the beginning of the week, we fill a series of gallon zip lock bags with meat, spices, sauces and other ingredients and freeze.  When it is dinner time we take the frozen meal out of the freezer, remove from the bag and place the contents in the Instant Pot and cook.  I add 10 mins to the cooking time when frozen.

Very little prep one day of the week gives you hassle-free meals all week long with no planning or prep. The best part is they don’t have to be thawed first so if you forget to remove from the freezer you can still easily get dinner on the table.

Have you ever wondered how to dye your hair with Kool Aid?  It is an easy way to add color to your that isn’t permanent. Kool Aid hair dye is a great way to experiment with a different hair color without a long-term commitment!  Kids will have fun trying out different hair colors.  This is one of the many creative  Kids Crafts and Activities we are sharing this summer here on Skip to my Lou. There is no reason to be bored! Just check out this boredom buster idea list for inspiration.

Kool Aid Hair Dye

This Summer we are trying to do some fun things that are unexpected, fun and things we can’t do during the school year. My daughter’s one request was to have color in her hair.  So I decided that we would let her have her crazy colored hair this Summer since we don’t have any school policy’s holding us back. But our biggest dilemma was that she couldn’t decide on what color she wanted to have. First, it was red, then blue, then pink, purple was thrown in there once too. The only one I told her we wouldn’t do was green because I didn’t want her to look like a little blonde who spent too much time in the pool. We spent too many efforts last year preventing her hair from turning green from our daily swims!

I came up with the perfect solution to her color problem, we would do temporary Kool Aid hair dye colors all Summer long and she can pick whatever color she wants next once the color has faded.

We decided to do the Kool-Aid method. Did you do this when you were a kid? Who didn’t right?!

This was really simple and because of my daughter’s blonde hair didn’t take us long at all. Just something to remember, the darker the hair color, the longer it’s going to take for the color to take hold. It does work better on lighter hair. Follow all these instructions and tips so you know everything you need to know on how to dye your hair with Kool Aid.

Supplies for Kool Aid Hair Dye

• Old T-shirt
• 2-3 packages Kool-Aid
• 2 cups water
• cup or bowl
• comb
• blow dryer
• hot straightening iron

Kool Aid Hair Dye Color Ideas

My daughter actually wanted purple hair this time around, so we used 2 Purplesaurus Rex packages and 1 cherry to give it a deeper color. It was a very purple liquid but came out more of a deep pink color in her hair. Next time we may try grape instead and see where that gets us!! This chart seems to give some good color combo ideas but unfortunately didn’t have a purple option. You might like some of these color ideas.

• Mixing strawberry and grape can make a purplish red
• Cherry can produce deeper red
• Tropical punch can give a brighter red
• Black-cherry mixed with strawberry can give you a bright red

How to dye your hair with Kool Aid

This process is best done on freshly washed hair that has been completely dried. To finish the prep, make sure to comb out your hair and if there’s any that you don’t want colors, pull them up in an elastic or clip. We only did the underneath of my daughter’s hair, so I pulled the top layers up into a top knot to keep them from reaching the color.

Also, put your child in an old t-shirt that you don’t care about getting colored. The hair will drip and could possibly dye the shirt they are wearing. Also, I would recommend gloves if you don’t want your fingers to also be the color of the hair!

Mixing the Kool Aid dye

Combine your Kool-Aid packets and water in a pot and heat on medium-high heat until boiling. Boil for 1 minute then remove from the heat. Pour your mixture into a heat resistant cup or bowl. Depending on how much hair you want colored will determine how much liquid you want. I started with all of it in a bowl but quickly took some out because I didn’t want to risk coloring the whole hair strand as we only wanted a few inches colored. Keep in mind that the color will creep up the hair strands, so dip it about 1/2 inch less than you want to be colored.

Kool Aid Dye TIP

Adding a few drops of conditioner to the hot water and  Kool-Aid will help the color permeate the hair more evenly. It also makes the mixture less runny and easier to handle.

How long do I leave the Kool Aid on the hair?

I did her hair in 3 sections. Dip them in the color and let them soak for about 15 minutes. Darker hair may need 20-25. This is a perfect time to put a movie on and let them sit and watch while you hold their hair in the color. Because of how light my daughter’s hair is, we only kept the hair in for about 5 minutes and it still got a very vibrant color! Once the strand is done, ring it out with an old towel to avoid drips and move on to the next section until all is complete.

Once everything is colored where you want, it’s time to dry it. Blow it dry using a comb to brush out any tangles. Just know that for the first little bit the hair will be a little stiff or sticky feeling.

After you blow it dry, the best thing to do is to use a hot straightening iron to set the color. Just a quick run over the hair will do fine. As soon as I was done, I took a damp cloth and wiped down the heating pads to remove any residue that may have transferred.

Now style the hair as you normally would, and you are all done!!!

This Kool Aid hair dye is not a permanent dye, but depending on the hair, could last a few days or maybe a few weeks. It’s a fun thing to do with your little ones who want a little personality in their do!

How to remove Kool Aid Hair Dye

Depending on how often you wash your hair the Kool-Aid will naturally fade in about two-three weeks. If you want it out sooner try this!

Boil a pot of water on the stove. Pour the boiling water into a heat safe container. To the water add 2 Tablespoons of baking soda and stir to dissolve. Dip your hair into the water for about 30 seconds. You should instantly see the dye coming off. Hair may be dipped a few times if needed. This is extremely drying for the hair so be sure make to deep condition after.

Easy Girls Hair Style Pony Tail Climbers

This hairstyle is so simple you almost don’t need a tutorial. You can do this hairstyle in these simple steps.  Start with clean, damp hair. I prefer to work with damp hair when doing braids and other hairstyles. Separate and part into a ponytail. I like to do two ponytails for this style.

Simply put in in rubber bands one inch apart all the way down.  I like to use goody rubber bands because they stay in place and don’t slide around. You need the rubberbands to stay in place for this style to look good all day, especially after swimming etc.

This style is very forgiving, slide the rubber bands around to make even on both sides.  To prevent chlorine damage (we have blonde hair) you can even coat the hair in hair conditioner before a swim. This helps prevent tangles too! To remove I usually break the bands with clippers or small scissors, I have even broken them with my teeth in a pinch.
