Detox Water to Stay Healthy and Hydrated

detox water

Have you tried Detox Water? Everyone knows that drinking more water is good for you.  Your body needs it– plain and simple. Add some fruit and or essential oils and you can also detox your body!

detox water in glass

Reasons to Drink More Water

Energy!  Did you know that drinking more can actually help your energy level?  When we are dehydrated, our body feels fatigued and can also feel weak.  Drinking enough water every day will help you maintain clear thinking and better concentration.

Weight loss!  When our body is hydrated it allows our organs to work at their optimal level.  This increases metabolism and allows the body to burn more fat. Plus, water has zero calories, so if you are substituting a glass of water for your favorite drink or soda, you will be saving a bunch of extra added calories!

Healthy skin! Drinking water hydrates your skin.  This seems especially important for me in the winter when I seem to have such dry skin. Water helps diminish the appearance of wrinkles (that’s a huge bonus!) and it flushes toxins out of your body.

Nutrients!  Water allows nutrients and oxygen to travel to your cells and organs.  It is vital in keeping our body healthy at it’s most basic level–the cellular level.  Water also regulates our body temperature, removes waste, and helps protects our joints and organs.

Lemon Vitality Essential Oil for Dextox Water

Each year, I start my water resolution off with a bang and a need for an extra roll or two of toilet paper each week!  I tend to slow down on my water and return to higher calorie substitutes by February 1st (I know–It’s a shameful pattern!)  The one thing I have realized over the years, is that I just crave the taste.

This year, I have found a great secret weapon.  My family has been using essential oils for almost everything under the sun.  We have been experimenting with homemade cleaners, mood-lifting room sprays, and new recipes using ingestible essential oils.  We’ve been replacing some of our more toxic products with some alternatives, using  Young Living Essential Oils.  It is a company that we trust, and you can read more about that by clicking here.  I also suggest that you don’t ingest just any essential oil.  You need to check out the safety before you put it in your water or on your skin!

lemon essential oil

I have been adding one to two drops of Lemon Vitality to my tumbler full of ice water, and I am loving it!  Lemon Vitality (from Young Living) contains limonene.  It has a fresh citrus flavor and makes a great addition to food–and especially to plain water!  I have found that I also really like the lime, peppermint, and grapefruit vitality oils in my water too.  I’m not a doctor, health practitioner, or oil guru.  I am just a mom reading research and trying recipes to determine what works for my family!

Detox Water Health Benefits

Studies have shown that detox water can help aid in weight loss, help flush toxins out of the body, and can also help with general wellness and a healthy digestive system.  Whether you are creating detox water with essential oils or cutting up fruit and vegetables to infuse your water, here are some great tips.  The flavors can be mixed together or can be drunk on their own.

detox water in large jar

Detox Water Benefits

  • Grapefruit:  As an oil or cut up fruit.  When added to your water it gives it a refreshing-tart taste.  It is known to have fat-burning enzymes that can help aid weight loss.  Contains Vitamins A & C.
  • Peppermint:  As an oil or add a few mint leaves.  Mint water helps aid with digestion, bloating, and upset stomachs. Gives you fresh breath and can help you feel invigorated.
  • Cucumber:  Sliced up into the water.  Cucumber water has diuretic properties that help to guarantee that most of the moisture in your body will be flushed from your system as quickly as possible.
  • Lime and Lemon:  As on oil, or sliced up.  Lemon water helps relieve bloating and ease indigestion.  Great way to enjoy the flavor of lemonade or limeade without all of the extra sugar.
  • Ginger:  Sliced up.  Helps calm the stomach.  Has anti-inflammatory properties, can help with fat-burning, and boosts the immune system.
  • Orange.  As an oil or sliced up.  Citrus fruits contain Vitamin C to help boost the immune system.  Helps eliminate toxins and flush the body.

Detox Water Recipes

Now don’t worry if you don’t have all the fruit on hand. A drop each of the essential oils will give you the same amazing benefits!

detox water

Detox Water

Whip up this simple recipe to stay hydrated and give your body loads of healing benefits!

  • 1  lemon (sliced)
  • 1/2  cucumber
  • 2 inches of fresh ginger (peeled and sliced)
  • a couple sprigs of mint leaves (about 15 leaves)
  1. Fill a half gallon glass container with fruit and mint leaves and cold water.
  2. Let steep for an hour. Keep in refrigerator.

Want more citrus flavor?  Add in a sliced lime and or orange. Don’t hesitate to make this recipe your own.  If you like less ginger and more cucumber it is easy to adjust this recipe and still get amazing health benefits!

How long do you let detox water sit?

You might wonder how long you can leave the fruit in the water. Fruit-infused water is best after two-four hours or after it has had a chance to infuse overnight. Under refrigeration lemon slices in water can keep for up to three days. The water can be replenished and lemon slices reused.  I remove the cumber and mint and add fresh when doing this.

lemon detox water

The possibilities for detox water recipes are endless and you can mix and match to create amazing flavors.  I love to mix cucumber and peppermint or orange and ginger.  I often add berries, such as raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries, when they are in season.  They go great with cucumbers and mint too!  I love drinking the infused waters and I can’t imagine ever going back to drinking only plain water again.  I often mix up an entire pitcher of detox water and keep it cold in the fridge so I can have a refreshing glass as soon as I am thirsty!

fruit infused water

Drinking water with essential oils isn’t the only way to enjoy their health benefits. There are so many ways to use essential oils!  This peppermint sugar smells delicious and makes your skin silky soft. I have included a cute DIY printable label to make it into a sweet gift, but I would make an extra batch to keep one for yourself too! If you want to know another way we use essential oils at our house try this stinky shoe spray.

I love these Essential Oils if you want to know more! You will always find them diffusing in our home.

best-brownies.jpg

I love the smell of homemade brownies. Waiting for these chocolatey brownies to cool is optional!  These Homemade Brownies are extra chocolatey and made completely from scratch. With this homemade brownie recipe, you’ll never need a box mix again! We love these rich brownies with dense, fudgy middles and crinkly tops. They are so simple to make and they taste amazing.  You certainly will be able to taste the homemade difference.

homemade brownies

Homemade Brownies

If you are looking for a go-to brownie recipe to add to your baking repertoire, we think this is the BEST homemade brownies recipe out there. It is sure to cure all those cocoa cravings and can be mixed up in minutes.  I know what you may be thinking–you are too busy for homemade brownies AND the box is just so convenient.  Take the homemade challenge and once you taste the difference, you won’t be going back to the box.

The best part is the recipe goes together quickly and fills a 12 X 18 pan so it feeds a crowd.  The ingredients are simple and should become a staple in your pantry.  You never know when you might need a quick dessert for unexpected company, and these brownies will certainly make them feel like special guests!  It is the perfect dessert to take to a potluck or a picnic.  Children AND adults will be coming back for a second brownie as this recipe stands above the rest.

Brownies from Scratch Tips

  • Refrigerate the brownies to make cutting easier
  • Don’t overmix the batter and you will get moist fudgy homemade brownies
  • Spray the baking pan with cookie spray, then line with parchment paper and spray again.  Once brownies are chilled, they can be removed from the pan then cut into squares.
  • The brownies can be made ahead and frozen. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap and foil to keep them fresh.

Homemade Brownies

My most favorite brownies and they feed a crowd!

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 1/3 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 8 large eggs
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 1 pound 4 sticks unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups coarsely chopped walnuts (I omit)
  • 2 cups 12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
  2. Lightly grease and flour a 17 by 12 by 1-inch baking pan (I use a 12″ X 18 “X 1” pan) and set aside. (I line pan with parchment paper then spray with cooking spray)
  3. Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt in a bowl and stir to mix.
  4. Cream together the eggs, sugar, butter and vanilla in a separate bowl until well blended.
  5. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and mix just until all the dry ingredients are moistened. Do not over mix.
  6. Fold in the walnuts and chocolate chips and stir to blend. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
  7. Bake 35 to 40 minutes, until the brownies are firm to touch. They will be slightly soft in the center when tested with a toothpick. Remove from the oven and cool about 40 minutes before cutting.
  8. Trim the edges and cut into 2 1/2 by 3-inch bars.

To make cutting the brownies easier, refrigerate brownies a couple of hours or overnight. Lift parchment to remove brownies from pan before cutting.

More Brownie Recipes

We would like to believe we are brownie connoisseurs! We love baking brownies (and eating them)!  Hopefully, these recipes will inspire you to teach the next generation about homemade recipes and cooking from scratch.  The times spent in the kitchen together baking brownies will certainly be part of making some wonderful memories.

Brownies with Chocolate Rice Krispie Topping peppermint brownies

Looking for some unusual but delicious brownie recipes?  Try these brownies with a crunchy topping. They are super moist and topped with creamy marshmallow and chocolatey rice layers.  If you like the combination of chocolate and peanut butter, these brownies are three layers of perfection and the chocolatey rice layer gives them a unique texture.  I guarantee they won’t last long once they are sliced into squares! YUM!

Peppermint Brownies in a jar make a delicious and thoughtful homemade gift!  They would make a great Christmas gift for a teacher, or just about anyone on your list.  They are easy to whip up a bunch at a time.  The layered ingredients look very festive,  and the jar makes them simple to give (and keep on hand for extra gifts!)

If you love the combination of chocolate and mint, these Junior Mint brownies are gooey and minty!  Candy added to a brownie…What’s not to love?  They are the perfect treat for a movie night.

No time to make up a pan of brownies but still need a chocolate fix? This chocolate mug cake is a family favorite for sweet cravings! It takes only a few minutes to have a dense fudgy treat!  I like it baked just at 1 min 45 seconds. This leaves a bit of warm chocolate batter just like a lava cake. YUM!

Players bounce a ping pong ball off the wall and into a bucket. Whoever has the most balls in the bucket at the end wins.

dog bandanas

Have you ever wondered how to make dog bandanas?  If you are a pet lover you can make this Furry Fan Pet Bandana for your dog or cat.  It makes the perfect gift for an animal lover. It is so clever how these dog bananas slip over the pet collar making it easy and comfortable for your pet!

pet bandanas

Cat and Dog Bandanas

This holiday season, don’t overlook your favorite furry fan – even your cats and dogs can show their spirit! Today I want to share with you a  simple and fun pattern for making cat and dog bandanas. Your Fido will flip for it or, in my case, Chloe the cat!

bandana dog collar

You will need the following supplies to make a bandana dog collar!

  • 1 yard of your favorite team’s fabric!
  • Coordinating Thread
  • Cat or Dog collar
  • Erasable marking pen or pencil
  • Hard edge ruler
  • A piece of paper (size will vary by how big your furry friend is)

How to make dog bandanas

Let me show you how to make a dog bandana. This easy pattern works for any animal that wears a collar.

dog bandanas

1. Measure over from the fold for 1/2 the length of your collar. Mark. Use your ruler to draw a diagonal line from your mark down to the fold, creating a triangle shape. How big the triangle is will depend on how big your animal is. For instance, the triangle for our dog collar (for a golden retriever) was 11.5″ long along the fold line. However, the triangle for the cat collar was 6″ along the fold line. Cut out the triangle and open the paper out.

step by step how to make a dog bandana

2. Place your pattern piece on the right side of your fabric.  Note, when you are cutting out your scarf, consider the print placement. Cut out two triangles from your pattern piece.

bandana pattern

3. Place both triangles right sides together. Pin and stitch with a 1/4″ seam allowance along the top edge. Be sure to backstitch! Fold open the scarf and press the seam open.

Step3

4. Measure the width of the largest buckle or closure on your pet’s collar. Add 1/2″ to that measurement. Using this measurement, make a mark along the corner seam. Fold in the corner edge to that mark. Press and pin. Repeat on the other side. Stitch with 1/4″ seam allowance. Press.

Step4a step4B

5. Fold right side together. Pin along the two remaining open edges. Stitch with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Trim allowance close to the stitching line.

Step5

6. Turn scarf right side out through the collar opening. Press. Use your marking pen to draw a line from the bottom of both short lines of stitching to form the collar casing. Stitch along the line. Press.

Step6

7. Topstitch along the bottom edges of the bandanna with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Have fun choosing your thread colors. I used navy blue topstitching on the scarf above and white on the one below.

Step7

Thread your collar through the open casing, and dress your pet up in its new favorite scarf!

How to make playdough

how to make homemade playdough

Let me show you how to make playdough. It is a great kid’s activity!  It is easy enough for kids to help with, only takes about 10-15 minutes, and gives you comparable results to store bought playdough.

How to make playdough

You probably have all the necessary materials on hand in your pantry. No need for store bought playdough anymore! You are going to love this playdough recipe! It is soft and smooth just like the real thing.

how to make homemade playdough

Homemade Playdough Recipe

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • food coloring

playdough recipe

How to make homemade playdough step by step

When in this process you allow your kids to assist is entirely up to you.  Younger children can mix dry ingredients, older kids can stir (supervised) at the stove top, and adding food coloring is fun for everyone.  My son is under two, so he mainly helps me with the “playing” part.  Please supervise your children and use caution with the stove and hot dough. If you are concerned about the stove and hot dough, keep reading I have a no-cook recipe at the bottom. Either way you will know how to make playdough and it will be oh so soft and silky!

how to make playdough

  1. Combine all ingredients (except food coloring) in a medium-sized saucepan.
  2. Stir over medium heat until smooth.
  3. Stir continuously until the dough balls (about 1-2 minutes).  Remove from heat.

homemade playdough recipe

  1. When the dough is cool enough to handle, knead until smooth.
  2. Form into a ball.
  3. Divide into as many colors as you’d like to make.  A single batch makes a good amount for four colors.

homemade playdough recipe

  1. Add food coloring to the divided dough.  Gel food coloring works quite well.  I have not tried liquid food coloring.
  2. Knead the food coloring into the dough. To protect your countertop, knead over wax paper.  To protect your hands, wear plastic or rubber gloves if you have them (you could also put the dough and food coloring inside a ziplock bag and have the kids squish it around inside).
  3. When the dough is a consistent color, ball and set aside.

homemade playdough

  1. Repeat with the rest of your colors.
  2. Put the dough in separate containers.  Toddler-sized snack containers are a good size, and I have also wrapped the colors individually in wax paper and stored in zip-lock bags.
  3. Store in an airtight container until ready to use.  It will stay soft for several weeks if stored airtight. The playdough can be stored at room temperature.

Hmm … I feel like I’m forgetting the most important step.  Oh, that’s right – PLAY! Now you know how to make playdough at home!

How to make playdough without cooking

You might ask how to make playdough without cooking. Yes, it is possible! Try:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3/4 cup salt
  • 1 Tablespoon oil
  • food coloring

Mix the wet ingredients together and mix the dry ingredients together. Slowing add the wet ingredients to the dry until you have the correct consistency.  This is a super quick and easy playdough recipe! Notice this recipe has no cream of tartar. Yes, you can make playdough without cream of tartar. Cream of tartar is an acid and is used in cooking as a stabilizing agent for items like meringues and whipped cream. While it does help with the consistency…. I bet you won’t miss it.

Alum versus Cream of Tartar in Playdough

While they aren’t the same thing they can be interchanged in your playdough recipe since they both help with texture and consistency.

Slow Cooker Cheat Sheet

slow cooker cooking times chart

If you have a slow cooker (Crock-Pot)  I hope you can use this handy slow cooker cheat sheet.  It is a simple reference guide that answers common slow cooking questions.

Slow Cooker Reference Guide

slow cooker cooking times chart

Just print the chart in color and hang on the inside of your cabinet door.  You can even laminate this slow cooker cheat sheet if you would like to give it more protection.

Slow Cooker Tips

  • Cut food into even pieces so that they cook evenly at the same time.
  • Always cook covered.
  • Season well! The longer cooking times of the slow cooker can diminish the flavor of herbs and spices.
  • If you have time brown meats first. Brown is a flavor and not a color when cooking!
  • Don’t use too much liquid. Most slow cooker recipes call for 50 percent less liquid than regular recipes (except of soups and sauces).

Slow Cooker Recipes

Here are some of my family’s favorite slow cooker recipes.

Slow Cooker Baked Potatoes. We love being able to have delicious baked potatoes even in the summer when I don’t want to turn on our oven.  Set out a few toppings for a baked potato bar and you have a fun interactive meal!

Crock Pot Lasagna is another crowd pleaser and it is easy to throw together!

Buffalo Chicken sandwiches are probably the easiest Crock-Pot recipe out there and they never disappoint.  I am gluten free so I make a buffalo chicken lettuce wrap.

Crock Pot Candy is probably the craziest thing we make in the slow cooker! Candy!?! Yes, we make delicious peanut clusters in our Crock-Pot!

Chex Mix can even be made in the crockpot!

More Kitchen Cheat Sheets

I find these reference charts save me time in the kitchen. If you have an Instant Pot I have one for it too!

Send a box of sunshine to a friend that needs a boost. Here are all the printables you need!

box of sunshine

Why should you send a box of sunshine?

The other day a friend mentioned how blue she was. I was actually shocked. This is a person that always seems happy.  I am constantly shocked by her talent and creativity. She is probably the most successful person I know. To hear these feelings from someone that I felt had it all was surprising. It made me realize that no matter where we are in life we ALL struggle with feelings of doubt, hopelessness, and insecurity.

I truly believe we are here to help each other along. It doesn’t take much to give someone a little bit of encouragement and show that they matter and you care. Often that is all someone needs to push them forward and give them hope!
